The Hike goes to Monte Tezio – a 961 meter high mountain about 10 km north of Perugia, where locals have for centuries gone “hunting” for wild asparagus and mushrooms. On the way we pass the remains of an old “neviere”, which is a so-called snow cellar. In general, a “neviere” was a natural or artificial cave, where the snow in the winter was compressed and protected by a thick layer of straw so that it could be used during the hot summer months. The ice was cut in blocks with an ax in the summer and transported down the mountain by mules – either for use in the hospital or with more wealthy classes.
